Talvi tulee - Winter is on it’s way

My dear English speaking friends. I still have not gotten around to creating an English section to our blog. Quite honestly, it takes too much time to figure these things out for me. Timo does it with his eyes closed and with his toes, but I’m not so clever…
Last weekend the second snow snowed down on us. It seems that this one will still not stay on the ground for more than a couple of days, but the Saturday morning was just too beautiful not to be photographed and shared with you. White, powder snow, just a few degrees on the - side and a clear sunny sky. It’s these mornings that give us strenght to go on in Finland. October and November have been very warm this year, so it’s been raining not snowing and without the snow it has been even more dark and wet all autumn. I don’t get depressed very easily, but this year the darkness of the days has been exceptional.

There is a forest right behind our houses, so we have a beautiful view in the morning from the kitchen window. As the planes to Helsinki-Vantaa airport mainly use the other runways these days, there are hardly ever planes to be seen in the mornings

Just a view towards the forest past the houses. The air smells as crisp and clear as the new snow.

By the time the “real” snow comes - the one that will stay through winter, this pile will be at least a metre high and 3-4 metres long. We try to shovel most of it to the backyard. More pictures about that, hmm… if I say January, I shouldn’t be very wrong.

Winter’s coming, Christmas is getting closer, so it is absolutely compulsory to bake some ginger bread cookies And make a big dough, because someone always eats half of it… Must be the cats. This is the one Christmas tradition that’s important to me, apart from the obvious - giving presents and making the season’s cards. And with Timo’s grandmother’s recipe, they are always so tasty. Well, it’s mainly sugar and butter with a few spices….

Well, I end this update by wishing you all a peaceful December, where ever you are.
And I make an early New Year’s resolution to update more of my news and pictures to you on this blog in English. Or you could all start learning Finnish - it is such an endangered language and if we could have all the people studying it, there would be no wars in the world, our grammar has such a calming effect on every one

Palsternakkakeitto

• 500g palsternakkaa
• 2dl kermaa
• kasvislientä
• 200 g tummaa koskenlaskijaa
• valkopippuria, muskottipähkinää, suolaa

1. Keitä pilkottu palsternakka kasvisliemessä pehmeäksi
2. Kaada vesi pois ja lisää sulatejuusto
3. Soseuta sauvasekoittimella
4. Lisää sekaan kerma sekä mausteet. Keitä muutama minuutti ja lisää tarvittaessa kasvislientä

Eukonkanto

Lauantaina tuli sitten käytyä teatterissa. Improvisaatioteatterissa.

Kyseessä oli siis Stella Polariksen kauden viimeinen näytös, josta oli juttua aiemmin. Illan näytelmän nimi oli Eukonkanto. Näytelmä oli hyvä, joskin edellinen näkemämme näytelmä oli minusta hauskempi. Eukonkanto oli näytelmänä kyllä monitasoisempi kun aikaisempi, mutta tämä oli osittain varsin surullinen näytös. Sniif.

Stella Polariksen keväkausi alkaa 6. tammikuuta ja liput tulevat kuulemma joukukuussa myyntiin. Pidä kiirettä jos haluat omasi!

Ai niin se ruoka! Olihan sitä pakko käydä syömässäkin
Maailmamme parasta lihakastiketta (ei siis pihviä) saa Hyvinkäältä Hämeenkadun kiinalaisesta ravintolasta (se ravintola missä kiinalainen täti puhuu englantia ja tarjoaa loistavaa vihreää teetä). Nimi on Oriental Food Palace tai jotain. Joku Hyvinkäältä voisi tarkistaa nimen. Reilussa pippurissa uitettu liha oli nautaa ja kokki kantoi sen pöytään tirisevän tulikuumalla pannulta sipulien kera. Iso NAM.

Maailmamme paras pihvi ollaan muuten syöty Tallinnassa Ravintola Argentiinnassa. Hyvänä kakkosena on Berliinissä oleva Argentinalainen ravintola.

Budapest

Viikonloppu Budapestissä takana. Kaupungissa on ehdottomasti potentiaalia, mutta ainakaan näin syksyn lievässä harmaudessa se ei parhaita puoliaan varmasti näyttänyt. Kaupunki on yllättävän laaja, joskin turistia kiinnostavat alueet ovat varsin pienet ja erillään toisistaan.

Julkinen liikenne on halpaa ja toimivaa, no prob. Ai niin, julkisissa ei kannata ajaa pummilla, tuolla on _oikeesti_ paljon lipuntarkastajia. (Ja täydennetään että minulla ei tuon kanssa kanssa ollut ongelmia, kunhan osui silmiin…)

Mitä tästä opimme?

• Airport Minubuss vie kentältä haluamaasi hotelliin. Lentokentältä ostetaan piletti ja jäädään aulaan odottamaan kunnes kuski tulee huutamaan hotellin nimeä. Kaikki toimii ihan joustavasti, mutta takaisin kentälle pitää kyyti muistaa varata jo 24h ennen koneen lähtöä. Ei siinä mitään, mutta ainakaan Best Western Grand Hotel Hungaria ei suostunut minulle varausta tekemään, vaan antoivat puhelimien ja käskivät itse soittaa. Yllättäen ko lafkan numero oli varattuna ja pitkään. Soittelin sitten pitkin päivää kännystä ja ehkä kymmenennen soiton ja jonottelun jälkeen sieltä vastattiin.
• Best Western Grand Hotel Hungaria on tyypillinen massahotelli. Ei mitään vikaa, mutta ei millään lailla houkuttele uudestaan käymään. Mutta minkäs teet kun jättää hotellin varaamisen edelliseen iltaan ;(
• Széchenyi fürdo niminen kylpylä on kuulemma euroopan suurin ja kaunein. Jos näin on, en minä ainakaan kaipaa suurinta ja kauneinta. Olihan kylpylä ihan hieno, siellä oli varmasti pari kymmentä allasta sisällä ja ulkona. Ehkä tuon terveysvaikutukset on paremmat, mutta kyllä Blue Lagoon voittaa tuon 10-0. Kylpylään oli kyllä helppo mennä, sillä keltainen metro pysähtyy kylpylän taakse. Kylpylä on keskellä kaupungin puistoa, joten kyllä tuolla suunnalla riittäisi päiväksi tekemistä. Englannninkielisiä opastuksia tuolla ei hinnastoa lukuunottamatta juurikaan ollut. Niin, ja kylpylän sisäänpääsy 2000 forinttia on koko päivän lotraamiseen oikeuttava piletti. Ulos mennessä saa uuden kuitin, ja kuittien kanssa jos menee takaisin kassalle saa rahoistaa osan takaisin.

Ai niin. Mistä tunnistaa jenkit Széchenyin kylpylässä? No niillä on tietysti lippikset päässä

Wallace&Gromit

Vihdoinkin oli aikaa käydä katsomassa ensimmäinen kokoillan Wallace&Gromit elokuva, The Curse of the Were-Rabbit (Kanin kirous), ja kyllä kannatti. Cheeeesseeee…. Jotta sinun elokuvanautinto olisi täydellinen, tee toki kyytipojaksi Wensleydale Leek Pie
Elokuva on Nick Parkin toinen pitkä elokuva, ja varsin hauska onkin. Aikaisempi kokoillan elokuva on tietenkin Chicken Run. Mutta jos minulta joku sattuisi kysymään, niin kyllä lyhyet Wallace&Gromitit sekä Creature Comforts (Eläimellistä menoa) ovat silti parempia kuin nuo elokuvat.
